‘Increase number of directors in NMDFC’

May 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - KALABURAGI:

Municipal Administration and Minority Affairs Minister Qamarul Islam has demanded that the Union government reconsider the policy of rotating the directors of the National Minority Development Finance Corporation which denied the opinion of unrepresented States in the affairs of the corporation and said that the Centre should increase the number of directors to accommodate all the States.

Talking to The Hindu from New Delhi, Mr. Qamarul said that during his meeting with Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Thursday, he raised this issue and said that the rotation of the directors in the corporation has denied representation to Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which has a sizeable number of minority population, in the board of directors.

He said that he apprised the Union Minister about the pro-active role played by the Karnataka Minority Development Corporation in helping the corporation formulate new schemes to help minorities. Mr. Qamarul said that he had also pleaded with Mr. Naqvi to release Rs. 50 crore to the Karnataka Minority Development Corporation by the corporation for extending different loans to the minorities.

Mr. Qamarul said that the Karnataka Minority Development Corporation had no liability to the corporation and all the loans obtained earlier have been fully repaid, including the current demand.

Currently, there are 135 applications pending in Karnataka Minority Development Corporation seeking loans for 2014-15 under different schemes.

Besides this, fresh applications have been submitted in the district offices of Karnataka Minority Development Corporation seeking fresh loans.

The release of Rs. 50 crore would go long way in meeting the demand this year.
