Importance of self-employment stressed

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Kagodu Thimmappa has called upon the youths from backward classes to develop entrepreneurship skills.

Foundation stone

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the construction of the first floor of the District Gangamata Sangha’s hostel in the city on Sunday.

Training programmes

The State government was extending self-employment training through the Devaraj Urs Backward Class Development Corporation, he said.

The youths from backward classes should participate in the training programmes with enthusiasm. The corporation was also extending financial assistance for them for self-employment ventures, he said.

The associations of the social groups identified as backward class should come forward to construct hostels for the poor and meritorious students.

‘Ensure access’

It is necessary to ensure access to higher education for students from backward classes, he said.

Mr. Thimmappa also pressed both the Union and State governments to consider the demand for according Scheduled Tribes tag to the Gangamata community.

He also participated in a felicitation programme for newly elected gram panchayat office bearers.

Shivamogga Rural MLA Sharada Poorya Naik and member of Shivamogga City Municipal Council Sunitha Annappa were among those present.
