December 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 24, 2016 10:57 am IST - DHARWAD:

Decks have been cleared for the functioning of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here from July 2016, with a three-member technical committee, constituted by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, making an announcement on it here on Saturday.

The committee, comprising IIT-Bombay director Devang Khakkar and professors Shivaprasad and Punalkar, visited the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) premises where the transit campus would come up.

Later speaking to presspersons, Mr. Khakkar said the new campus was expected to come up in four years on 500 acres at Mummigatti. As per the official communication from the Centre, 120 students would be enrolled for the IIT-Dharwad, he said.

IIT-Bombay would be the mentor for IIT-Dharwad. The HRD Ministry had set up an IIT monitoring cell at IIT-Bombay and the committee members had been designated as officials on special duty to supervise the process of setting up IIT-Dharwad.

The team had given some suggestions to the district administration on developing infrastructure on the transit campus. May 2016 has been set as the deadline to complete works on the transit campus and the handing over of the premises to IIT-Dharwad, he added.
