‘Hospitals can do without doctors, not nurses’

January 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - Manipal:

“Hospitals can do without doctors, but not without nurses,” said U.T. Khader, Health and Family Welfare Minister, here on Saturday.

He was inaugurating a two-day international conference on “Evidence Informed Practice: An Approach to Healthcare Reform” organised by Manipal College of Nursing.

He also released a book containing the conference proceedings on the occasion.

The conference is part of the culmination of the silver jubilee celebrations of the college.

Resource persons from the U.S., the U.K., northern Ireland and Australia and about 500 delegates are participating in the conference.

Mr. Khader said that nursing was one of the noblest professions and called upon nurses to remember their pledge, when in service.

“It is not what you treat, but how you treat. The society needs you,” he said.

He congratulated the college and said the institution was a model college for all the colleges in the State and the world as well.

K. Ramnarayan, Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University, who presided over the inauguration, also released the abstract book titled, “Evidence from the portals of MCON.”

He said: “We all suffer from ‘instructional elephantiasis.’”

What he meant was that a lot of information would be passed on to the participants in the next two days of the conference. He wondered if conferences like these were meant to inform, to influence or to inspire.

“To me, first and foremost it should inspire, then influence and finally inform.” He hoped the participants would be inspired.

“If that does not happen, the conference will not serve its purpose,” he said.

Anice George, Dean of Manipal College of Nursing and Director of Nursing Education, Manipal University, welcomed the gathering.

Tressey Treesa Jose, organising secretary of the conference, gave an overview of the conference. Judith A. Noronha, Associate Dean of MCON, proposed a vote of thanks.
