In an alleged case of honour killing, the body of a young pregnant woman was found burnt at Gundakanal village in Muddebihal taluk on Sunday evening.
The police have arrested Akbar (brother); Ramzanbi (mother); Davalbi (sister), and Jilani (sister’s husband).
Banu Attar, 20, had eloped and married Sayabanna Kennur, 21, and settled down in Goa a year ago. A few days ago, she returned home in the hope of winning her family’s acceptance, said the police.
“We are looking for two more family members, who too are accused of being involved in the case,” said Shivakumar Gunari, Additional Superintendent of Police.
He escaped attack
Mr. Sayabanna said it was around 3.30 p.m. on Sunday when they were having lunch that four or five persons from his wife’s family descended on them.
“They dragged us out. I escaped, but I could not save my wife. Later, I came to know that she was brutally killed by her own family,” he said.
Mr. Sayebanna, a lorry driver, who has filed a case with the Talikot police against his in-laws, said Ms. Banu’s family was unhappy about her relationship with a Hindu man. “Both of us came back hoping that the last one year would have reduced my in-laws’ anger. But we did not expect this,” he said.
