The Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industries has extended its support to the general strike by the chemists and druggists in the country on October 14 in protest against the proposal of the Union government to allow online trading in drugs and FDI in retail.
The Gulbarga District Chemist and Druggist Association headed by Kalaburagi South MLA Dattatreya Patil Revoor, which is affiliated to the All-India Chemist and Druggist Association, had given a call for the closure of all medical shops and establishments on October 14.
Members of the association would take out a procession in Kalaburagi on October 14 and submit a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner. President of the HKCCI Radhakrishna Raghoji and secretary Amarnath Patil in a statement issued here on Monday said that the proposed online tradition in pharmaceutics violated the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and would sound a death knell to more than eight lakh chemists and 40 lakh workers employed in this business.
The introduction of online business would make the gullible youth vulnerable to the habit of consuming narcotics drugs and there would not be any check for duplication of medical prescription slips, which could be sent to any number of online shopping platforms to procure narcotics, he said.
