The Higher Education Academy, a special initiative by the State Government to improve the quality of higher education, was inaugurated by the Minister for Higher Education R.V. Deshpande at a function at Karnatak University campus here on Saturday.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Deshpande said that the academy was set up to provide necessary training for college teachers, which in turn would help improve the quality of higher education.

While the teachers, recruited for primary and secondary schools, are compulsorily trained at D.Ed/B.Ed courses, there were no such arrangements for those teaching in PU, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The academy seeks to overcome this lacuna and keep the teachers abreast of latest developments, Mr. Deshpande said and promised all facilities to the newly established academy.

Taking a dig at Vice-Chancellors for focusing more on constructing new buildings during their tenures, MLC Basavaraj Horatti said that they should focus on improving academic standards.
