As expected, most pre university (PU) colleges in Mysuru have reported an increase in the demand for seats during the academic year 2015-16.
Though the Department of Pre University Education had fixed May 18 as the last date for distribution of application forms, most colleges continued to give away the forms even on Tuesday in view of the demand for seats.
College authorities said that they would continue to issue application forms for a few more days.
As per schedule, colleges have to announce the first list of selected students on May 27.
As Mysuru has recorded high pass percentage of 89.1 per cent in SSLC examination this year as against the 82.36 and 81.05 per cent registered during the previous two years, the number of students becoming eligible for admission to PU colleges has increased. More than 35,800 students are eligible for admission as against the combined intake of 33,000 seats in 210 government and private PU colleges in Mysuru district.
“Not only have we received more applications, we have also noticed that the percentage of marks scored by the applicants is higher than last year’s. The competition for admission will be high”, said Mr. Siddaraju T.R., Principal of the Government Maharaja’s PU College, Mysuru. “Also, 23 students of our college have passed with distinction during the recent II PU examination”, he claimed.
With the college receiving more than 3,000 applications for roughly 900 seats, Mr. Siddaraju said he was expecting pressure from politicians as well as officials of his department in the matter of allotment of seats. He claimed that the department officials had already instructed him to accommodate 10 per cent more students than last year.
The good results in SSLC exam have instilled the hope among certain colleges that their seats may fill up in Science and Arts courses. “The good results may help us fill up our seats in science courses”, said Principal of St. Philomena’s PU College Fr. Vincent.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Pre University Education, Mysuru, K.M. Puttu said the government PU colleges will be allowed to admit more than the usual number of students, but the intake in private colleges is fixed.
