People who were displaced owing to the Hemavati and Yagachi projects in Hassan district have demanded that the State government provide relief to all those who have not yet received it.

Veeresh Gowda, president, Hemavati Mattu Yagachi Mulugade Nirashritara Sangha, at a press conference on Tuesday, said more than 2,000 applications seeking alternative land for the land they lost in the projects have been pending with the district administration for several years.

“It has been over 40 years since the Hemavati project was implemented. However, those affected have not been compensated. The government machinery has not shown land for the displaced. Even in cases where the land has been shown, the applicants have not been able to take possession owing to opposition from locals,” he said.

Mr. Gowda said that not even 50% of the total number displaced were allotted suitable land. “In some cases, the applicants have come forward to share the land with the locals to avoid opposition from them,” he said.
