HC constitutes committee to look into metro workers’ welfare

A committee will monitor the facilities provided to the workers engaged in the Namma Metro project, as per provisions of various labour laws till completion of the entire project. The High Court of Karnataka on Monday issued a direction in this regard to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL).

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice D.H. Waghela and Justice Ashok Hinchigeri passed the order while disposing of a public interest litigation petition filed by social worker Samuel Sathyaseelan.

The Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) or his nominee; State Labour Commissioner or his nominee; BMRCL’s Chief Engineer or other nominee on its behalf; a representative from among all contractors; a representative from among all sub-contractors; a Union leader of the workmen engaged in the project or any representative of the workmen will be the members of the committee.

The Bench has directed the committee to meet at least once a month and ensure strict enforcement of various provisions of the laws. The committee was constituted as suggested by the BMRCL.
