Licence holders told to deposit weapons at police stations

The Department of Excise has set up control rooms across the district to prevent illegal supply and sale of liquor during gram panchayat elections.

Of the 234 gram panchayats in the district, 230 have completed their term and elections to them will be held on May 29.

The department has set up seven control rooms, which will be operating round-the-clock, a senior official told The Hindu.

“We have decided to intensify the night checking of vehicles to prevent illegal transportation of liquor,” he said.

The official urged the people to pass on any information related to illegal sale of liquor to the round-the-clock control rooms. Identity of such informers would be kept secret.

The district control room numbers are: Mandya 08232-220313, Maddur 08232-236126, Malavalli 08232-243938, Pandavapura 08236-255651, Srirangapatna 08236-252559, K.R. Pet 08230-263524 and Nagamangala 08234-286225.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner M.N. Ajay Nagabhushan has directed licence holders to deposit the firearms in their possession at the nearest police station till the completion of counting of votes.

All licence holders of firearms should immediately hand over the weapons and obtain an acknowledgement from the official concerned in view of the gram panchayat elections, a release said.
