Govt. orders suspension of GP president for forcing pourakarmika into manhole

The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department (RDPR), Government of Karnataka, has ordered the suspension of the president of Chamundi Hill Gram Panchayat S. Geetha for allegedly forcing a pourakarmika to go into a manhole and clear it.

Earlier this month, Ms. Geetha and Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) Anand had forced a contract pourakarmika to enter an overflowing manhole in Tavarekatte in the GP’s jurisdiction to clear a clog instead of using machinery.

When the matter came to light after a video of a man, standing neck deep in a sewer, takes dips to clear the clog, was circulated on social media platforms, Assistant Director of Social Welfare Department D.G. Gurushantappa visited the spot for an inquiry and lodged a police complaint against Ms. Geetha and Mr. Anand.

The complaint lodged at Krishnaraja police station in Mysuru alleging that Ms. Geetha and Mr. Anand had forced the pourakarmika to clear the clog without using any equipment. A case was booked against the duo for violating the provisions of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013.

Mr. Anand, who was subsequently suspended, was arrested by the K.R. police in Bengaluru.

Chief Executive Officer of Mysuru Zilla Panchayat Shivashankar had sent a report in the matter to the RDPR.

An official in the Mysuru ZP said that the orders issued by RDPR on suspension of Ms. Geetha had been communicated to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Mysuru ZP through an e-mail. The hard copy of the order is yet to reach here by post, the official added.
