The government is thinking of handing over investigation into the killing of M.M. Kalburgi to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), after it completes its probe into the Gauri Lankesh murder case, Home Minister G. Parameshwara said.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Dr. Parameshwara said the SIT has done a “commendable job” in cracking the Gauri Lankesh case, which was a big challenge. The SIT is now on the last leg of the investigation, gathering additional evidence and more information, he said. “Going by the success in the case and the in-depth information the SIT has gathered, we are thinking of handing over the Kalburgi case to the SIT,” he said.

Though several agencies are working on different cases of the killing of four rationalists across the country — Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare, Kalburgi and Gauri Lankesh — the SIT had excelled and cracked the case and also helped other agencies to take forward the cases. “The SIT has done a comprehensive investigation and even Kalburgi case needs such an approach,” he said, adding that the idea is at the discussion level.

Family’s demand

Speaking to The Hindu on Wednesday, on the eve of the third death anniversary of the rationalist, Kalburgi’s son Shreevijay, said the CID was “taking too long” with the investigation. “Looking at the other case, the SIT seems to have done a good job with it. The government has to decide which agency is the right one to solve the case,” he said.
