‘Governments ignoring needs of slum-dwellers’

“Since successive governments in the State have neglected the welfare of slum-dwellers, it has become inevitable to launch a state-wide agitation to pressure the government to provide necessary facilities to slum-dwellers here,” A. Narasimhamurthy, State convener, Slum Janandholana Karnataka, has said.

Speaking at discussion here on Sunday, he said the Centre had been framing policies in favour of capitalists and has completely neglected the welfare of the poor and needy. Slum-dwellers are suffering from lack of facilities of proper drinking water, street lights, roads and other needs, but the government was not ready to hear their grievances.

“Successive State governments have also failed to address these needs. Elected representatives come to slum areas only during elections and make a handful of promises. After the elections they never return. The slum-dwellers in the State are fed up of submitting memoranda to the representatives,” he added. He demanded that the State government ensure jobs to earn livelihoods and houses to live, under government schemes to the people. “The youth in these slum areas should make sustained efforts to pressure the State government,” he urged.
