Government PU colleges doing little to train students for CET

June 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - Hassan:

“It seems the government does not want us join professional courses”, said Roopesh Kumar, a PU student of the Government Junior College in Hassan. He is angry with the Department of Pre-University Education Department for not helping students clear the entrance tests that students have to face to claim seats in professional colleges.

“We in government colleges are trained to clear the annual exams, results of which have no significance, when it comes to joining professional colleges”, the student said.

The performance of government college students in entrance tests is average compared to those in private schools, which conduct special coaching for CET. Interestingly, neither the respective colleges nor the officers of the department maintain records of ranks secured by their students.

When The Hindu called up Shivanna, principal of Vani Vilas Government PU College in Hassan on Sunday, he said he was not aware of the ranks secured by his students in CET. “Nowadays results are announced on the Internet. The department does not send us a copy. We don’t get to know how our students performed in CET. Moreover, students stop coming to colleges once they get results of the annual exams”, the principal added.

N. Rajamma, Deputy Director of PU Education in Hassan, also has no details of the students’ performance in CET.

The students have to face CET to study medicine, engineering, agricultural sciences, veterinary science, dental and other courses. “My son is studying in government junior college in Hassan. He has scored 90 per cent in SSLC. I wish he gets into medicine. But, the college has no programme to equip students for the entrance tests. I am a farmer, I can’t afford to send him to private institutes for CET coaching”, said Ramanna of Hariharpur in Holenarsipur taluk.

The teaching faculty also feel the need for special arrangement for CET coaching in government schools. “Annual exam and CET are two different types of exams. Students need special training to face the CET. Our students, those scored well in annual exams, are not securing good rank in CET”, said a lecturer in physics, who wanted to remain anonymous.

We are not aware of the ranks secured by our college students in CET.
