Google cannot replace teachers, says UGC Vice-Chairman

Vice-Chairman of University Grants Commission H. Devaraj has underlined the need for imparting quality education to students.

He was delivering the convocation address at the 8th annual convocation of Tumkur University on Saturday. Mr. Devaraj said Google cannot replace teachers and only ‘gurus’ can give good direction to students.

Instead of depending on information available on Google and the internet, students should attend classes regularly to enhance knowledge, he said.

Lauding the rich culture and heritage of the country, he called upon the younger generation to emulate the values and ideals of Indian culture. As many as 100 ‘Kaushala Kendras’ (skill development centres) would be established across the country to help students, he said.

Governor Vajubhai R. Vala conferred honorary doctorate degrees on A.S. Kiran Kumar, ISRO chairman; T.R. Anantharamu, Senior Scientist (retd.); Geological Survey of India, and Kannada writer Baraguru Ramachandrappa.
