Gold powder found in woman’s inner wear

Customs estimate value at ₹24.33 lakh

Customs officials on Monday seized 796.18 gm of gold powder worth ₹24.33 lakh from a woman who had concealed it in her inner wear.

The accused, Shaheda Bano, a Mumbai resident, had come from Abu Dhabi and was stopped at Customs in Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

This is the second such incident of women smuggling gold in this manner.

Earlier this week, a woman identified as Sakeena Shaikh was caught smuggling 853.40 gm of gold powder mixed with other materials concealed in her inner garments. She, too, was a resident of Mumbai.

“It seems that smugglers are trying out a new means to smuggle gold by hiding it in garments of women passengers, who work for them,” said Harsh Vardhan Umre, Additional Commissioner of Customs.

In two other cases, 1,207. 951 gm of gold was seized from two passengers who had arrived at KIA from Dubai on Monday. They are residents of Salem, in Tamil Nadu .
