‘Give more transgenders jobs in Government'

February 12, 2012 09:11 am | Updated 09:11 am IST - Bangalore:

Eligible transgenders should be recruited to government service on the model set by the Karnataka High Court, which recently appointed a transgender to a Group D category post, urged Sangama, a human rights organisation fighting for the rights of transgenders.

Talking to presspersons here on Saturday, Akkai Padmashali, project manager of Sangama, hailed the commitment of the High Court administration and the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA) for keeping up their promise to bring transgenders into the mainstream of society in appointing C. Anu as a Group D employee.

Ms. Akkai said the State Government should recognise transgenders and encourage them to continue their education so as to be eligible for jobs in government departments. This would ensure that they do not resort to begging and prostitution for their survival. Ms. Akkai also pointed out that many transgenders have talent and the qualification for appointment to various jobs, but the government should recognise them.

According to her, Ms. Anu had found the first week in her job at the High Court a memorable experience and had said “it's heaven for me”.

Veena, another transgender and Anu's friend, said the High Court's gesture job would encourage many transgenders not to hesitate to join the mainstream.
