Four school students, at Halliberu village located in the Western Ghats near Kollur in Udupi district, who had no electricity connection to their houses, can now read their books under a solar lamp.
It was donated by Compassionate Hearts Inc from the U.S.
A press release issued here on Tuesday said that the lamps were handed over on June 14.
Remote location
Halliberu village has about 40 houses belonging to the backward Kudubi community.
Due to its remote location, the village residents are deprived of necessities such as a proper road and electricity. To provide lights to all these houses, Rotary Club of Kundapur South has adopted this village and donated solar lights to around 16 houses last year.
This time, Compassionate Hearts Inc donated 1,045 dollars for the cause.
With this amount, the four houses were provided with solar lamps costing Rs. 15,000 each. Selco Solar India Pvt. Ltd is the service provider.
The Compassionate Hearts Inc is an organisation setup to help people who are not fortunate to take care of their needs themselves.
Jiji Varughese, Anitha Varughese and Deepa Bhat, project leads, and Ramesh Bhat from Rotary Kundapur South, were present on the occasion, the release added.
