Four persons, including a couple from Dharwad, were killed on the spot in a head-on collision between two cars near K. Chandargi village on the Belagavi-Bagalkote-Hyderabad State Highway 20 in Katkol Police Station limits of Ramdurg taluk on Monday afternoon.

Two of the victims — Basangouda T. Patil (55) and Mallaiah Adivaiah Mathapati (33), both residents of Salahalli in Ramdurg taluk — were burnt alive in the fire that ensued the collision.

They were travelling from Lokapur to Yergatti.

The two others who were killed on the spot were identified as Badrinath Bhimrao Vadafe (58) and his wife Suman (55) of Saptapur in Dharwad. They were heading towards Lokapur from Yergatti when the accident occurred.

Katkol Police Sub Inspector Ravi Kumar Dharmatti, who reached the spot, told The Hindu that the exact reason behind the cars catching fire would be known during further investigation. He said the bodies were being shifted to the Primary Health Centre at Katkol for post-mortem. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
