All towns with a population of more than one lakh in the State would receive transportation facilities by the end of the year under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), State Transport Minister and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Chairman Ramalinga Reddy has said.

Purchase of buses

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for construction of a bus terminal at Challakere town here on Friday, he said the Union government had set some norms for purchase of new buses under the JNNURM, and for providing systematic bus services to people in all eligible towns in the State.

A total of 4.80 lakh accidents have occurred in the last one year in the country, with more than one lakh people having lost their lives.

In Karnataka, more than 9,000 people have died in accidents and one of the key reasons for these accidents was lack of proper driving skills.

Training centres

So the KSRTC had opened driving training centres in Hubballi and Mysuru districts with food and hostel facilities for the drivers.

There are plans to set up a similar training centre at Holalkere taluk in the district.

“The department of social welfare has written a letter urging release of Rs. 25 crore to set up the training centre. It has also identified 25 acres of land for the purpose,” he said.
