Forest Department staff captured a male leopard at Halekoplu near Hassan on Wednesday. The departement officials had put up a cage with a bait in the village following reports of a leopard moving around the village. The animal fell into the trap on Tuesday night.

Sivaram Babu, Deputy Conservator of Forests, told The Hindu that the animal is about five-year old. “It is in good health. Right now we have kept it at Gendekatte Forest Park. We will release it to forest area later”, the officer said.

The animal was spotted in the villages around Halekoplu for past few days. It had taken away a couple of cattle, forcing the officers to place a cage.
