‘Focus on supply of potable water’

October 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - Mandya:

C.S. Puttaraju, Mandya MP, on Saturday instructed officials to focus on providing drinking water to the parched villages in the district. He chaired a meeting of the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee at the Cauvery Auditorium at Mandya Zilla Panchayat office here.

He stressed the need for establishing drinking water plants, with the utilisation of MP/MLA local area development funds, at the places where fluoride contamination is is affecting the health of villagers.

The contract of setting up drinking water plants at 43 places in the district was awarded to a private agency. Only three of them are functional.

The rest either haven’t come up, or aren’t working.

Expressing his displeasure, Mr. Puttaraju told the officials to do a background verification of such private agencies before handing over such responsibilities.

Officials explained to the MP that the agency had not cleared the electricity bills and appointed operators to run the plants.
