“Fluctuation in areca nut rate in the market from time to time is ambiguous. Nearly 51 per cent of areca nut produced is sold in the market and traders pay tax. If the entire areca produced is sold in the market, then a stable rate is possible,” said Campco Mangaluru president Konkodi Padmanabh in a program held at APMC Yard in Siddapur on Tuesday. Extension of areca growing areas was not a good development and it should be grown in traditional areca growing areas, he said.
Cultivation of subsidiary crops like pepper, cardamom, plantain and cocoa was better, because it would help the growers when the rate falls, he said. Campco is working for the welfare of areca growers. With the help of other organisations, three times it has fought to increase tax on import of areca from other countries, he said.
