A farmer committed suicide by jumping into a well near his farm at Honnavalli in Sringeri taluk on Saturday.
The Sringeri police gave the name of the deceased as B.S. Ratnakar (55). He is said to have borrowed up to Rs. 5 lakh from nationalised and cooperative banks for his agricultural activities. He was in distress as he suffered loss owing to poor yield in his arecanut farm.
His daughter-in-law H.K. Kanthimati told the police that Mr. Ratnakar was worried after allegedly receiving notices from banks to clear the dues. The Sringeri police have registered a case.
He was in distress due to crop loss.
