‘Facilities given to endosulfan victims as per guidelines’

The Department of Health and Family Welfare on Friday said that monthly pension, and medical and other facilities to endosulfan victims in Udupi district were being provided as per the government guidelines.

The district unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangha on Thursday alleged that despite the High Court order, many people suffering from disabilities due to the spraying of the pesticide in Udupi district were not getting pension and other facilities owing to “insensitive” attitude of officials.

Rohini, District Health and Family Welfare Officer, told The Hindu that there were 1,314 endosulfan victims in the district. The total monthly pension being paid to them was Rs. 23,30,400. Pension of some people had been returned to the Department of Health and Family Welfare because of discrepancies in their names and bank account numbers.

This also included some patients who had not got pension for 13 months. But the department was making arrangements to send it to them. To ensure such problem did not reoccur, photocopies of the passbooks had been taken. “There is no mismanagement of funds as alleged as all money spent is documented and accounts are being maintained,” she said.

The checking of disabilities of the affected persons was done by specialists and experts. As many as 34 patients had been referred to Kasturba Hospital in Manipal for advanced treatment. Their treatment charges were being borne by the department, she added.
