Ex-servicemen to stage dharna tomorrow

The members of Udupi district unit of Ex Servicemen’s Association would be staging a dharna at the Martyr’s Memorial at Ajjarkadu here on July 19 demanding “One Rank One Pension” (OROP).

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Chandrashekhar Suvarna, member of the organising committee, said the dharna would be staged in support of the protest undertaken by the ex-servicemen in New Delhi for the last one month.

There was a 40 per cent difference between the pension received by a solider in the army in 2006 and a solider whose has just retired. To do away this discrimination, the ex-servicemen had been demanding OROP.

Though the Congress had promised OROP in the 2004 general elections, it did nothing for nine years while it was in power. At the fag end of its tenure in 2014, the United Progressive Alliance government announced that OROP would be implemented, but allocated only Rs. 500 crore for it.

The Bharatiya Janata Party too promised the implementation of OROP in the run-up to the 2014 general elections, but even after 15 months, there was hardly any action. Hence, the district unit had decided to stage dharna on July 19, Mr. Suvarna said.
