The lesson on the history of Bahmani sultanate in the Class VI English-medium textbook has an error which could mislead students.

The error has been noticed by Rehaman Patel, an artist and faculty, Department of Studies in Visual Art, Gulbarga University. He says the mistake crept in while printing the books.

Elaborating further, Mr. Patel said that the social science textbook (second semester) on the chapter about the history of the Bahamani sultanate has two photos — one of Jama Masjid, Vijayapura, and another of Jama Masjid, Kalaburagi.

“The photos are correct, but the names have been misplaced. For the Jama Masjid in Vijayapura, the caption reads Kalaburagi, and for the Kalaburagi Jama Masjid the caption reads Vijayapura Jama Masjid. This wrong information could mislead the students. It is like having portraits of great leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar with captions interchanged,” Mr. Patel said.

Mr. Patel said that he noticed the mistake over a year ago, and since then he has been writing to the government to correct the error. But his efforts have been in vain, he added.

“In the history of Deccan, Bahmani and Adil Shahi dynasties have both ruled and constructed monuments in their respective regions. Textbook writers must know the exact place of the monuments, else it will misinform the readers,” he said.

When contacted, Vijayapura district in-charge Minister M.B. Patil said he will take up the matter with Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait.
