‘Elected leaders ignoring Udupi Assembly Constituency’

May 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - Udupi:

BJP leader K. Raghupati Bhat said on Tuesday that the State government has not taken steps to provide either an agriculture college or a postgraduate centre of Mangalore University at Brahmavar town in Udupi Assembly Constituency.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Bhat said that the previous BJP government had sanctioned Rs. 5 crore each for establishing the agriculture college in Brahmavar and postgraduate centre at Kolalgiri near Brahmavar. But the present Congress government had not taken either of the proposals further, he said.

Though the previous BJP government had announced that Brahmavar would be made a taluk headquarter in its last Budget, the Congress government had put that proposal on hold.

He said that Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj had done nothing to retain the postgraduate centre at Kolalgiri. It had now been shifted to Belapu village in Kaup Assembly Constituency, which was being represented by the Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake.

Kolalgiri was equidistant for people of all the three taluks of the district such as Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala and would have provided easy accessibility, he said. Brahmavar was more qualified to become a Town Municipal Council (TMC) as it had more multi-storied building when compared to Kaup. Yet, a proposal has been sent to make Kaup a TMC. Though, Kaup, at best, could be a Town Panchayat, he said.

Development

“Neither Mr. Madhwaraj nor Mr. Sorake are interested in the development of Udupi Assembly Constituency. Mr. Sorake has forgotten that he is the Udupi district in-charge Minister. Instead he is behaving like in-charge Minister for Kaup constituency,” Mr. Bhat said.

Union Law Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda will inaugurate the local committee office of the BJP at Brahmavar on May 22 and also address a party workers’ meeting on the same day, Mr. Bhat said.
