The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has begun cracking the whip against persons found dumping garbage in open spaces and public places.

Over the last fortnight, the MCC officials have been imposing penalties ranging from Rs. 100 to Rs. 500 for throwing garbage in open spaces, vacant sites, footpaths, roadsides, drainages, etc. Though most of the offenders are engaged in commercial activities like owners of bars and restaurants, or flower shops, and vegetable and tender coconut vendors, even individuals have been penalised.Health officer of MCC Ramachandra said he spotted the employee of a prominent hotel in Jayanagar dumping waste by the roadside. “I immediately penalised the offender,” he said.

Many continue to dump garbage into gutters and roadside. Officials will also issue receipts for penalties on the spot, Dr. Ramachandra said.

Littering in public places and dumping garbage in inappropriate places is an offence under the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Act 2013
