Instead of trying to understand the interests of students, a majority of parents pressure them to study engineering, medicine and other courses owing to various reasons including earning more money by working abroad or in some multinational companies and private hospitals, Mallikarjun Kurki, Head of the Department of Economics Department in AVK Degree College, has said.
Speaking after inaugurating The Hindu Education Plus Annual Career Counselling session at Kuvempu Kannada Bhavan here on Sunday, he said that the parents should study the strengths of children and find out whether they are capable of understanding a particular subject or not and if they are interested to study it or not. Secondly, the parents should try to study the weakness of their children before taking a decision on their career.
They should also understand the fact that it is highly impossible to survive in the present competitive world by only scoring high marks in the examinations; instead the students should learn the required skills to reach expected goals in their field of interest.
Talking about the opportunities in the field of engineering, Executive Director of SJM Vidyapeeta G.N. Mallikarjunappa said that in any course the students can perform well and achieve success, only when they have interest.
“The students may not become successful engineers, doctors or even teachers if they have no interest,” he said.
Secretary of MV PU College S.J. Sridhar said that the parents should not concentrate only on engineering and medical fields, as there are a lot of opportunities in the teaching field. In Karnataka alone, there are more than 2.5 lakh teaching posts vacant in different schools and colleges.
Resource persons Dr. Shashikala, Head of the Department of Pathology, S.S. Medical College and Hospital, Tanvir Ahmed and Niranan enlightened the students on the various aspects of engineering, medicine and other fields and also clarified the doubts of the students and parents in interaction session.
