Medical Education Minister S.A. Ramdas has decided to base the promotions and increments of government doctors on performance.
The decision comes in the wake of complaints about doctors neglecting their duties.
Speaking at a meeting at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here on Saturday, Mr. Ramdas said that job charts and diaries should be maintained in all government hospitals from August.
While health officials would maintain the job charts, doctors had to maintain a diary of their duties performed. Promotions and increments would be based on this information, he said.
The Minister said that the Government wanted to set up medical shops on the premises of all government hospitals to provide medicines to poor patients at half the price. This project would be launched soon, he said.
Research centre
KIMS would be developed into a research centre, and a meeting of local elected representatives and philanthropists would be convened to discuss its development, he said. Mr. Ramdas said the KIMS library would be open round the clock from August. KIMS Director Vasantha Kamat was among those present at the meeting.
