Deshpande seeks to set the record straight on IIT

Taking serious exception to the reported claims by Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani that Karnataka had not sought an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Higher Education Minister R.V. Deshpande on Friday chose the floor of the Legislative Assembly to set the record straight.

“I want to clarify that I myself had written to the HRD Minister seeking setting up of an IIT in Karnataka and offered to provide 500 acres of land at free of cost for the purpose,” Mr. Deshpande told the Assembly. This was in addition to writing letters to three Union Ministers from Karnataka seeking their help in getting an IIT for Karnataka. He noted that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard. “I just want to set the record straight as Karnataka is starving for an IIT,” he said.
