Deputy Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati on Tuesday directed the National Highways Division of Public Works Department (PWD), Udupi municipality, Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) and other departments to submit their reports of their requirements by July 10 to create a sustainable traffic system in the educational hub of Manipal. Chairing a meeting at the District Offices Complex here, Ms. Korlapati said that a sustainable traffic system would be created from the Syndicate Circle to KMF Dairy Cross in Manipal.
All the departments should study the region minutely and draw up their requirements. All the departments should submit their reports to the Urban Development Cell which would study them.
She said that it was necessary to create footpaths with interlock tiles for pedestrians. Instead of a mere bus stop, a bus bay should be created near the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) Junction.
To stop two-wheelers from being parked on the footpath, it was necessary to install railings on the periphery. The sustainable traffic system should be developed keeping in mind the needs of the future. It should be a long-term and a model project. The Department of Architect, MAHE, should prepare a blueprint for this project soon, she said.
The Udupi municipality should give the necessary permissions for this project. The municipal officials concerned should extend cooperation in the matter. The contractor implementing the widening work of National Highway 169A on the Udupi-Manipal stretch should be told to install new electricity poles after the old ones are removed or shifted during the widening process, Ms. Korlapati said.
Superintendent of Police Nisha James, Project Director of Urban Development Cell Arunprabha, municipal commissioner Anand Kallolikar, and Head, Department of Architecture, Deepika Shetty and other department heads, were present.
