Dept. sends reminders to excise licence holders on shifting shops

With the Supreme Court deadline on the closure of liquor shops and restaurants located within a 500-metre radius of national and State highways fast approaching, the Excise Department officials have sent reminders to excise licence holders on complying with the order.

However, there is still confusion among the bar owners following reports about the State government’s move on declassification of highways into urban roads.

In some districts, the Excise Department officials have decided to exempt liquor outlets and restaurants located within the city limits in the wake of the Cabinet decision on writing to the Centre on the declassification of roads. However, in others, they are waiting for specific direction from the government.

In Chitradurga, 224 bars, restaurants and liquor outlets will be affected because of the Supreme Court order. However, a recent decision on declassification into urban roads will save 64 shops, an official said.

In Belagavi, 426 bars and wine shops are in within half-a-kilometre from State and national highways. Deputy Commissioner N. Jayaram said that excise licences will not be renewed unless the shops shifted away from the 500-metre zone. Of these, 25 are likely to get exemption as they are located in rural areas.

In Vijayapura, of the 30 outlets likely to face the axe, there is no effort yet on shifting. An official said that the excise licence holders were still hopeful of getting exemption and were waiting for a last-minute government order to save them.

In Dharwad district, of the 259 such outlets, and restaurants, 152 have not been issued reminders as they are located on urban roads. However, 107 others will have to either close down or shift to other locations. Deputy Commissioner of Excise Ramesh Kyatannavar said that they have not yet received any application for shifting to new premises.
