Traders and owners of buildings along the Belur main road here observed bandh on Friday demanding compensation for building owners before taking up the road widening work.

The protesters alleged that the officials were forcing traders and residents to vacate without following the legal process for land acquisition for road widening.

The protesters took out a rally from Veerashaiva Kalyan Mantap and gathered outside the tahsildar’s office here.

Addressing the protesters, Umashankar, president of Building Owners’ Welfare Association, said that nobody was opposing the widening of road.

However, traders and building owners should not be harassed in the name of road widening project.

“The government should allot alternative land for us and pay reasonable compensation for those parting with their valuable properties along the main road,” he said.

Town Municipal Council member B. Girish said that the protest was not against anybody.

“We want the government to issue notices as per the land acquisition norms and fix compensation before taking up the work,” he said.

Hotel Owners’ Association president Raghupathi, Traders’ Association leader Vasudev Dhanya and others took part in the protest.
