Vishwavallabha Tirtha Swami of Sode Mutt said on Friday that a new seer to head Shiroor Mutt would be appointed only after September 29.
Lakshmivara Tirtha Swami of Shiroor Mutt, who passed away on Thursday, had not appointed a junior seer to succeed him. Hence, Sode Mutt has taken over management of affairs at Shiroor Mutt as it is the Dwandwa Mutt (twin mutt).
The Sode seer, Vishwavallabha Tirtha Swami, said he has appointed a five-member committee for the maintenance of the immovable and movable properties of Shiroor Mutt. An inventory of items is being drawn up.
The seer told The Hindu that since it was the month of ‘Aashada’ and it would be followed by the ‘Chaturmasya’ period, appointments were not possible now. He said he would take the suggestions of all the senior seers of the Ashta Mutts on the matter. The person to succeed Lakshmivara Tirtha Swami would have to be aged above 18 and have a proper grounding in religious texts, he said.
After the Shiroor seer’s death, the authorities of Sode Mutt went to Shiroor Mutt and the ‘moola mutt’ in Shiroor village and locked the doors of all rooms, except those necessary for administration purposes.
