The death toll in the accident near Thoreshetti Halli in Maddur taluk of the district went up to 13 on Monday, with two more injured persons breathing their last at hospitals.

On Sunday night, a goods carrier transporting a marriage party veered off the Maddur-Kestur Main Road and rammed into a roadside tree. While two persons died on the spot, the others passed away at various hospitals at Mandya and Mysuru, or while being shifted to hospital.

The victims include 11 women. They have been identified as Sona (5), Renukamma (40), Meenakshi (37), Jayamma (46), Parvathamma (48), Beeramma (51), Sannamma (60), Madamma (63), Kamalamma (75), Kalamma (56), Pooja (16), Kariyappa (56), and Shivanna (45).

The vehicle, which had at least 75 persons, was heading to Maddur for a wedding. It was on the way from Yadaganahalli to Venkateshwara Samudaya Bhavan in Maddur. At least 25 persons suffered injuries and are undergoing treatment at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) and other hospitals in Mysuru.

Housing Minister M. Krishnappa, who is also the district in-charge, met the injured admitted at MIMS and promised to provide all medical help to them.

Meanwhile, the wedding the party was to attend was held in a simple manner late on Sunday. Relatives of the bride, Boramma, including her sister Pooja, were among the deceased. The ceremonial wedding reception planned for Monday was cancelled.

Compensation

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday announced a compensation of ₹1 lakh to the next of kin of the victims.

Speaking to reporters, he said he has directed officials to pay the amount to the families and also asked the Minister in charge of Mandya to visit the accident spot. He said the government would bear the medical expenses of the injured.
