An electrician who suffered an electric shock while repairing a heavy equipment at Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) factory at Jalahalli died on Friday.

Based on a complaint filed by a relative of the deceased, the Jalahalli police have registered a case of death due to negligence against the company where the deceased was working, its supervisor, and officials of BEL.

The deceased, Ravichandra Reddy, 35, was working with Vedprakash Electrical Company, which was given the contract to take up maintenance work at the factory. Reddy was among the 10 workers who were cleaning the machinery of 11-kV power plant on July 21. After servicing, the equipment was switched on, but one of the panels was not working. Reddy was asked to check it. While checking the panel, he suffered an electric shock and the equipment caught fire, the police said.

The staff members rushed Reddy to BEL hospital, from where he was shifted to Victoria Hospital, where he succumbed on Friday. The complainant said BEL officials present at the spot failed to switch off the power supply which led to the accident.

The police have registered a case against the company owner Purushtoham Naidu, supervisor Virupalasha and others.
