Local artistes in the field of performing arts will get a major platform to showcase their talent at Amba Vilas Palace during Dasara this year, as established artistes from other regions are not being invited to the scaled-down event. But with only limited number of performances to be scheduled at the palace this year, the authorities will be hard-pressed to choose the best, as there is no dearth of established or upcoming artistes in the city.

Scores of institutions impart lessons in classical performing arts in the city and have an opportunity to participate in the prestigious event. However, for connoisseurs of classical music, Mysuru Dasara was an opportunity to listen to the legends of both Carnatic and Hindustani genre and the performances of such icons would be missed this year.

The who’s who among classical artistes of the country have taken pride in performing at the durbar concerts which is easily among the most prestigious events in the country, held in the splendid backdrop of the illuminated palace.

Mysurueans were lucky to have listened to artistes ranging from Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Rajan-Sajan Mishra, Pandit Jasraj, Bhimsen Joshi, Shivakumar Sharma, Amjad Ali Khan et al, in the Hindustani genre, to greats like Kunakudi Vaidyanathan, Lalgudi Jayaraman, K.J. Yesudas, R.K. Srikantan, and L. Subramanyam. Legendary ghazal artistes like Pankaj Udhas, Talat Aziz and Jagjit Singh too have regaled the audience over the years.
