The contribution of 12th century Dalit Vachanakaras to the Vachana movement and the social reform movement was immense to establish a casteless society, said Minister for Municipal Administration and Minority Affairs Qamarul Islam.
He was speaking after inaugurating Dalit Vachanakarara Jayanti celebrations here on Tuesday. Mr. Islam said the prominent contemporaries of 12th Century social reformer Basaveshwara were Madara Channayya, Madara Dhulaiyya, Dohar Kakkayya, Samagara Haralaya and Urilingapeddi and all of them were Dalit Vachanakaras.
Referring to the ideologies of social reformers of different periods, Mr. Islam said the ideals of those social reformers and their contemporaries formed the basis for principles of social justice incorporated in the Indian Constitution. MLC Allamprabhu Patil said that the State government should establish Bijjnal Development Authority in Sedam taluk of Kalaburagi district to protect the 800-year old shoes which were gifted to Basaveshwara during 12 th century by his disciple Samagara Haralayya, made of his own skin.
