Dalit leader Shivaram Moga, national working president of the Republican Party of India, died here on Saturday after a brief illness.
A close associate of the legendary Dalit leader Shyamsunder, Mr. Moga was a follower of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and had met him in a bid to strengthen the Dalit movement in this part of Karnataka.
Mr. Moga in his younger days was known for his militant approach and had participated in movements against untouchability, which was largely prevalent in Hyderabad Karnataka region, and against the feudal system.
Mr. Moga (84) leaves behind six daughters, a son and number of grand children.
He was also close to the former Union Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge, the former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh, the former Minister Vaijnath Patil, and the former Minister late Vishwanath Reddy Mudnal.
Recognising his services to the society, the State government honoured him with the Rajyotsava Award and the prestigious Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Award.
The Gulbarga University had conferred a honorary doctorate on him.
According to the family sources, the mortal remains would be cremated at the Siddhartha burial ground in Ghatge Layout on Sunday.
