A six-member gang of dacoits assaulted a woman in the wee hours of Friday on the outskirts of Bellary city and relieved her of her ‘mangalasutra’ and cash to the tune of Rs. 15,000.

The dacoits gained entry into the mess owned by Jayaram Reddy, located near Bellary Engineering College on Hospet road, by breaking the door and assaulted Sulochana, who was alone.

Sulochana suffered injuries on her head and has been admitted to the VIMS hospital.

The gang, while making another attempt in the nearby hostel, fled when the inmates raised an alarm.

The gang comprised youths who are said to be Hindi speaking.

On getting the information, police led by the Superintendent of Police, Chetan Singh Rathore, visited the spot and also took up combing operation. A dog squad and fingerprint experts have been pressed into service to get some clues.
