A two-day workshop on environmental awareness for children, organised by Bala Vikas Academy and Hasiru Bhoomi Trust of Hassan, began here on Saturday.

The workshop will inspire children below the age of 18 to involve themselves in activities of nature conservation, besides educating them on sustainable development.

As many as 100 children from the district are participating in the event, inaugurated by Bala Vikas Academy chairman Shankar Halagatti. The workshop will help make children understand nature, biodiversity and wildlife.

Rupa Hassan, writer and convener of Hasiru Bhoomi Trust, said the programme has been organised as part of the nature conservation activities of the trust, which took birth five months ago.

“So far, the trust has succeeded in rejuvenating 20 ponds and four tanks in the district with the help of local people. The activities have received good response from all quarters. We have involved schools and colleges in our activities. The workshop would involve sessions by experts and field work,” she said.

Environmentalists Prakash Bhat, H.A. Kishor Kumar, Ahmed Hagare, C.N. Ashok and B.S. Desai will hold sessions. An outdoor event of planting saplings was also held at Government Veterinary College campus in the city later in the evening.
