Creating a platform for women artistes

For the first time, Sangameshwara Mahila Mandal, Kalaburagi, and Karnataka Nataka Academy, Bengaluru, have provided a platform for amateur women artistes to perform a stage play ‘Yuddhabharat’ based on Mahabharata in Kalaburagi on Friday.

President of the mandal Indira Manvikar told presspersons on Wednesday that the 20-member troupe will perform the play penned by Diwakar Hegde and directed by Shoba Ranjolkar.

Except for technicians, all the 20 characters in ‘Yuddhabharat’ would be played by women. Ms. Ranjolkar said the troupe was trained by local theatre artistes and rehearsal of every single scene was done for 15 days during the last one month. Even though ‘Yuddhabharat’ was based on the epic, it redefines in the present day form, she said. Ms. Ranjolkar said it would be an experimental play to encourage women and create a platform to explore their talent. The mandal will be organising such stage plays in coming days.
