Activists associated with Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI-M) burnt Prime Minister Narendra Modi's effigy at Ambedkar circle in Raichur on Tuesday to register their protest against “one year of anti-people governance” of Union Government.

They raised slogans against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Narendra Modi alleging them to have betrayed people who voted them to power.

“People believed in pre-poll promises of BJP and Narendra Modi and voted them to power. However, Union Government completely failed to meet the people’s expectations. They have failed to bring back blackmoney deposited in overseas tax heavens by Indians, control the sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities and put Country’s economy on the path of growth,” K.G. Veeresh, a party worker alleged. They did not transfer the benefits of fall of crude oil in international market to people by proportionately reducing oil prices in the domestic market, he added.

Modi’s initiatives for amending various Labour Laws and Land Acquisition Act drew harsh criticisms during the protest. “In order to please domestic and international capitalist class, Modi-led Union Government is restructuring as many as 700 hard earned labour laws in favour of industrialists. The amendment to Land Acquisition Act is aimed at ensuring quick and hassle-free land acquisition from farmers and handing over it to big industrialists,” criticised Sheksha Khadri, District Secretary of the party.

The agitating activists also opposed Union Government's open “support to communal forces”, cuts in budgetary allocations to social welfare schemes and privatisation of profit-making public sector units and unconditional invitations to foreign direct investments.

“In essence, one year of Modi’s rule has been pro-capitalist and anti-people,” Kariyappa Achholli, concluded.
