Coronavirus | Karnataka reports over 50,000 new cases, 346 deaths

Karnataka on Wednesday logged the biggest single-day spike of 50,112 new cases of COVID-19, with Bengaluru Urban accounting for 23,106 cases.

The State also recorded 346 deaths. The State had 4,87,288 active patients. The test positivity rate (TPR) for the day stood at 32.28%. Karnataka carried out 1,55,224 tests including 1,45,397 RT-PCR tests.

Now under partial lockdown, the State was awaiting instructions from the Centre on further restrictions. Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, on Wednesday, said that though curfew was imposed, the State awaited guidelines and instructions from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In Kerala, the day’s incidence on Wednesday was 41,953 cases from 1,63,321 samples.

The increase in test numbers brought the average TPR slightly down, to 25.69%.

The active case pool grew to 3,75,658. A record number of 58 deaths from the past few days were added to the COVID toll.

These included 18 deaths in Thiruvananthapuram (between May 2-3), 14 from Thrissur, 11 from Kollam, six from Kozhikode, four from Kannur, three from Malappuram, while one death each was reported from Wayanad and Ernakulam.

On Wednesday, 3,868 more patients were admitted to hospital.

Thiruvananthapuram had the highest number of 4,177 hospitalised patients, while Ernakulam, even with 58,378 active cases, had fewer hospitalised patients at 3,988.

Andhra Pradesh reported 85 new deaths and 22,204 new infections on Wednesday. Active cases rose to 1,70,588.

In the past day, 1,16,367 samples were tested and a positivity rate of 19.08% was registered.

The deaths were as follows: Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts 11, Anantapur 10, East Godavari nine, Prakasam eight, West Godavari seven, Chittoor six and Guntur, Kurnool and Nellore five each, Krishna four, Srikakulam three and Kadapa one.

For the first time, 12 districts reported more than 1,000 new infections. East Godavari reported 2,344 infections.

Telangana recorded 6,361 cases on Tuesday, testing 77,435 samples. The death toll touched 2,527 with 51 more fatalities.

Among new cases, the highest of 1,225 were in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation region.

The State government indicated that there was no proposal to impose a total or partial lockdown at present.

Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar said that lockdown in some States had yielded no significant results. The situation was totally under control and recent trends indicated that the COVID curve was flattening. “We have to think about the livelihoods of people and other issues,” he said.

The government would take a call on extending night curfew only after the deadline on May 8 at 5 a.m.
