Couple seeks police protection

June 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - HUBBALLI:

A young couple, who eloped to get married, have now returned to Hubballi only to approach the police to seek protection.

Bharat Jambore and Akshata Karaguppi, belonging to different castes, were allegedly being harassed and threatened by the relatives of the girl.

Akshata had gone missing on May 30 and following a complaint by Akshata’s parents, the police had registered a missing case. It was later revealed that Akshata married Bharat on May 30 and the marriage was registered at the Sub Registrar’s office in Hubballi on June 2. Bharat belongs to Maratha community while Akshata is a Dalit.

Meanwhile on getting to know that she had eloped with Bharat, Akshata’s relatives allegedly harassed and threatened Bharat’s parents and this prompted the couple to return to Hubballi. A police officer took the couple and called their parents to sort out the issue. Subsequently at the Ghantikeri Police Station the ‘negotiations’ between the parents and relatives of the couple continued.
