The State Congress has taken exception to the Centre’s decision to merge Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda (BoB.

Congress MLC Ivan D’Souza told reporter here on Thursday that Vijaya Bank had been set up with the main intention of serving rural areas and farmers. Most of its branches were located in rural areas, he said.

He expressed concern that merging the bank would affect its rural orientation.

Also, Vijaya Bank had a healthy financial position and its quantum of non-performing assets was lesser, he said, and suspected a conspiracy in the proposed merger scheme.

He called upon MPs from the State to protest against the merger of Vijaya Bank, during the Parliament session.
