COMEDK postpones online counselling

The UGET COMEDK (Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka) online counselling for engineering seats, which was scheduled to begin on Tuesday, has been postponed as the consortium is yet to receive the seat matrix from private colleges. It is most likely to take place on Friday (June 9).

However, this may not be good news for engineering seat aspirants as despite the delay in the counselling process, COMEDK has said that it will allot seats on June 21 as per the tentative schedule.

The CET first round of seat allotment is scheduled for June 27. Several students and parents had objected to this as they would be forced to pick seats in expensive private colleges, which is three times the government quota seats in private colleges. Last week, Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayaraddi had said they would speak to COMEDK authorities and request them to change their schedule in the interest of students.

However, S. Kumar, executive secretary, COMEDK, said close to 70 out of 143 engineering colleges were yet to share seat matrix. “We have not received any request from the State government and will ensure that we make up for the delay by announcing the mock allotment of seats on June 16, while the real allotment will be on June 21,” he said. While 45% of seats in private colleges are part of the government quota, 30% seats are part of COMEDK quota. The remaining 25% fall under the management and NRI quota.

Sujala K., an engineering seat aspirant, said: “Initially, I was happy when learnt that COMEDK had postponed counselling. Later, I realised that the seat allotment process had not been delayed. This will put me in a dilemma if COMEDK allotment is done before CET.” Rajeev S., a student, said that “poor communication” between COMEDK and KEA would make a large number of students to surrender their COMEDK seats after the first round and also pay a processing fee.
